In a nostalgic Moscow of 1976, an unlucky actor meets a charismatic writer, a living classic of Soviet literature, who turns his life into a tragicomic farce with the artistic bohemia, foreign-currency prostitutes, the KGB staff and agents of the CIA.

Ilya Goryunov has spent seven years in prison on false charges of drug trafficking. When Ilya is free he realizes that the old life that he yearned for is no more. Although he did not intend to take revenge on the man who sent him to prison, now there is no other way out.

The film is based on the true story of Captain Marinesku and set in 1944 during WWII at the Russian Navy Base. Young and beautiful Tanka is in love with Aleksandr Marinin, the brave Captain of the Russian submarine. He is under the KGB surveillance, and his life is at risk. He takes his boat to fight the Nazi fleet, and he cannot come back home without a victory.

What does money mean in the modern world? Where and when does a person cross the line beyond which there is no way back?..

Moscow, 1930s. A prominent writer's works are suddenly censored by the Soviet state and the premiere of his theatrical play about Pontius Pilate is canceled. He's kicked out of the Soviet Writer's Union, and quickly turns into an outcast with no means to survive. Inspired by Margarita - his lover, he begins working on a new novel in which all the characters are satirically reinterpreted from his life. The novel's central character is Woland - a mystical dark force who visits Moscow to revenge all those who caused the writer's downfall. As the Master sinks himself deeper and deeper into his novel, adding himself and Margarita as characters, he gradually stops noticing as the border between reality and his imagination fades away.

1968. In the cold and inhuman outer space, the Moon circles Earth in an elliptic orbit. The USSR prepares for a flight to the Moon. On Earth it is night: dark blue, like the cold and inhuman outer space. A train passes through the night. Incomprehensible laws of the universe make bodies collide. A young girl is involved in an accident with the car of a migrant worker. Nothing serious. The situation could be resolved quite simply. But the police officers who arrive on the scene have their own ideas.

Five-year-old Sasha often listens to the opera Madame Butterfly. It is shown on TV and broadcast on the radio. The story of Madame Butterfly becomes for Sasha the key to the dramas that take place in the family, but which she still cannot understand.
